A Weekend Around Bannerghatta: Wildlife, Nature & a Different Side of Bengaluru

Bengaluru is usually associated with busy roads, technology parks, cafés and a fast-moving city life.

But head towards the southern edge of the city and the atmosphere begins to change.

The buildings become less dense. The roads open up. Greenery starts appearing between the developed areas. And before long, you find yourself close to one of Bengaluru’s most interesting natural attractions — Bannerghatta Biological Park.

For anyone staying around Yarandahalli, Bommasandra, Jigani or South Bengaluru, Bannerghatta can make a surprisingly good weekend outing.

You don’t need to plan an elaborate trip.

Just take a day, start early and let the city gradually give way to the forest.

Start Your Morning With the Wild Side of Bengaluru

The best place to begin is, of course, Bannerghatta Biological Park.

Located around 22 kilometres south of Bengaluru’s city centre, the park brings together several experiences in one destination. Visitors can explore the zoo, go on safari, visit the butterfly park and experience the natural surroundings of the biological park.

The safari is the part many visitors look forward to most.

Instead of simply observing animals from behind barriers, the safari takes you through designated wildlife zones where you may encounter lions, tigers, bears and other animals.

There is something quite special about seeing these animals against a forested backdrop rather than in the middle of a conventional urban zoo.

If you’re planning to visit, starting early is a good idea. The park currently opens at 9:30 AM, while safari operations run from around 10:00 AM to 4:30 PM. The park is closed on Tuesdays.

Give Yourself Time to Explore the Zoo

It can be tempting to think of Bannerghatta as simply a safari destination.

But the zoo itself deserves some time.

Spread across part of the biological park, it houses a variety of mammals, birds and reptiles. Karnataka Tourism also highlights the zoo as one of the major experiences within Bannerghatta.

This is particularly useful if you’re travelling with children.

The safari gives you the excitement, while the zoo allows you to slow down and spend more time observing individual animals.

Rather than trying to rush through everything, give yourself enough time to walk around comfortably.

A weekend outing doesn’t have to feel like a race.

After the safari and zoo, the Butterfly Park offers a completely different experience.

The atmosphere changes almost immediately.

Instead of the excitement of spotting a tiger or lion, you find yourself surrounded by plants, flowers and colourful butterflies.

The Butterfly Park includes a butterfly garden and conservatory along with facilities designed to help visitors understand butterfly species and their life cycles. Karnataka Tourism currently lists the butterfly park as one of Bannerghatta’s principal attractions.

It’s quieter, slower and surprisingly relaxing.

And if you’re travelling with children, it can also be one of the more educational parts of the visit without feeling like a classroom lesson.

Don’t Rush Through the Afternoon

By this point, you might be tempted to move on to the next attraction.

Don’t.

One of the easiest mistakes to make during a weekend trip is trying to fit too much into a single day.

Bannerghatta has enough to keep you occupied for several hours, so there’s no need to leave immediately after ticking off the safari.

Have lunch.

Take a break.

Walk around at an easy pace.

Let the afternoon be slower than the morning.

That’s when a day trip starts feeling like a break rather than another item on your schedule.

Look Beyond the Main Attractions

One of the nicest things about visiting Bannerghatta is that the experience doesn’t end at the main entrance.

The wider region has a distinctly different character from central Bengaluru.

There are forested stretches, rocky landscapes and quieter roads where the pace feels noticeably slower.

You don’t necessarily need a formal attraction at every stop.

Sometimes a short drive through the greener parts of South Bengaluru is enough.

For photographers and nature lovers, this is where you may find some of the most enjoyable moments of the trip.

Turn the Day Into a Weekend

If you have more than one day, there’s no reason to make Bannerghatta a rushed day trip.

You can use the first day for the biological park and keep the second day for exploring other parts of South Bengaluru.

Depending on your interests, that could mean visiting a lake, exploring a local neighbourhood, heading towards Electronic City or simply spending a relaxed morning before continuing into Bengaluru.

The point isn’t to create the longest possible itinerary.

It’s to give yourself enough time to enjoy it.

South Bengaluru Has More Than One Story

The southern side of Bengaluru is interesting because several different worlds exist close to one another.

There are major technology and industrial centres such as Electronic City and Bommasandra.

There are growing residential areas around Jigani and Yarandahalli.

And then there are natural spaces around Bannerghatta.

You can move between these environments in a relatively short trip.

For someone staying in this part of Bengaluru, that variety makes planning a weekend much easier.

One day can be about work.

The next can be about wildlife.

And another can simply be about taking things slowly.

A Simple Two-Day Weekend Plan

If you’re staying around South Bengaluru and want a simple weekend plan, you could keep it like this:

Day 1 — Wildlife & Nature

Morning

Head to Bannerghatta Biological Park early.

Late morning

Enjoy the safari and explore the zoo.

Afternoon

Spend some time at the Butterfly Park and have lunch.

Evening

Return towards the Bommasandra–Jigani side and have a relaxed evening.

Day 2 — Explore at Your Own Pace

Don’t set an alarm for an unnecessarily early morning.

Have breakfast.

Explore somewhere nearby or head towards another part of Bengaluru depending on your interests.

You could visit a lake, explore the city, meet friends or simply keep the day free.

A weekend doesn’t always need a packed schedule.

Staying Around Yarandahalli

A weekend away is much more enjoyable when you have a comfortable place to return to.

For travellers exploring this part of Bengaluru, staying around Yarandahalli, Bommasandra or Jigani can be a practical option, particularly if Bannerghatta and South Bengaluru are part of the itinerary.

Kavins Inn is located at RK Township, Phase II, Yarandahalli, on Bommasandra–Jigani Link Road.

The property offers AC and non-AC rooms, giving guests the option to choose according to their requirements.

Whether you’re visiting Bannerghatta, travelling for work, visiting family or simply looking for a short break from your usual routine, having a comfortable room to return to makes the weekend easier.

You Don’t Have to Travel Far for a Change of Scene

Perhaps that’s what makes Bannerghatta and the southern side of Bengaluru interesting.

You don’t have to take a long road trip to feel like you’ve left the city behind.

A short journey can take you from technology parks and busy roads to wildlife, trees and open landscapes.

And that’s a useful reminder that a weekend escape doesn’t always have to mean leaving Bengaluru.

Sometimes, you just need to explore a different side of it.

Before You Visit Bannerghatta

A little planning can make the day much smoother.

Check the park’s current opening information before you leave, especially if you’re travelling on a weekday. Bannerghatta Biological Park is currently closed on Tuesdays, and safari timings and ticket options can change.

Weekends can be busy, so booking ahead is worth considering if you specifically want a safari.

And most importantly, don’t try to squeeze too many destinations into the same day.

Bannerghatta is best enjoyed when you give yourself time.

A Weekend Worth Taking Slowly

Bengaluru has plenty of famous attractions.

But sometimes the memorable parts of a trip aren’t the ones you planned most carefully.

It might be seeing a tiger during a safari.

Watching butterflies move through the garden.

Driving through a greener stretch of road in the evening.

Or simply returning to your room after a long day and realising you didn’t spend the entire weekend rushing from one place to another.

That’s the charm of exploring South Bengaluru.

If you’re planning a weekend around Bannerghatta, Bommasandra, Jigani or Yarandahalli, take it slowly. There’s more to discover than you might expect.

Kavins Inn welcomes you to Yarandahalli for your next stay.
